Looking Back to Move Forward: Closing 2025 With Intention and Entering 2026 With Purpose
As we approach the final days of 2025, I find myself returning to a theme I shared earlier this quarter: finishing strong is not just about results—it’s about the clarity and discipline that position us for a powerful year ahead.
In my last blog, Finishing Q4 Strong and Building Momentum for 2026, I emphasized the importance of tightening execution, reinforcing accountability, and ensuring that every action taken in the last stretch of the year contributes directly to the outcomes we want in the next.
This week, I want to take that reflection a level deeper. Because while finishing strong matters, how we close the year—mentally, strategically, emotionally—matters just as much as the KPIs we report.
1. Momentum Is Built in the Debrief, Not Just in the Doing
Many leaders push hard to the finish line but skip the most crucial step: the pause.
Before we enter 2026, take time—real time—to answer:
What did we do exceptionally well this year?
Where did we fall short—and why?
What habits, processes, or assumptions carried through 2025 that no longer serve us?
High-performing organizations don’t just measure performance.
They study it.
That introspection becomes the foundation of next year’s excellence.
2. Clarity Drives Confidence—and Confidence Drives Execution
The most consistent challenge I see in family businesses and entrepreneurial companies is not talent or tools; it’s ambiguity.
Ambiguity around:
roles and responsibilities
decision-making authority
priorities
accountability
As we close 2025, this is the perfect moment to ensure no team member enters 2026 wondering:
“What exactly am I supposed to do? What does success look like for me?”
Clear expectations create confident people.
Confident people perform.
3. Systems Build Consistency—Even Through Transition
This year brought important transitions at Focus Forward Management. Welcoming my son Ezra to our Family Business Advisory practice has been a full-circle moment—one I reflected on in my recent blog about our family business journey.
But it also reinforced something I see in every client organization:
systems protect companies from instability, emotions, and assumptions.
Whether transitioning leadership, onboarding next-generation family members, or preparing for growth, the organizations that thrive are the ones that invest in:
structured goal-setting and performance reviews
meeting rhythms
data-driven decision tools
communication frameworks that create transparency and alignment
Tools don’t replace leadership—they elevate it.
4. Culture Is Built in the Quiet Moments
As the year winds down, people take stock. They notice how leaders behave when the pressure is off. They notice whether recognition is genuine, whether conversations are honest, whether expectations remain consistent.
This is a perfect time to reinforce the cultural message you want to take into 2026:
We tell the truth.
We address issues early.
We reward performance, not proximity.
We care about people and results.
Culture doesn’t get built in January kickoffs.
It gets built in moments like these.
5. Enter 2026 With Purpose, Not Just Plans
Plans are important. But what truly drives transformation is purpose—a shared understanding of why the work matters and where the organization is going.
As you finalize your 2026 strategic priorities, ask yourself:
Does every team member understand the company’s direction?
Do they know where the business needs to be 12, 24, 36 months from now?
Does their individual plan connect to that future?
When purpose is clear, motivation becomes self-sustaining.
A Practical Next Step: Assess Your Company’s Value Before 2026 Begins
If you're ready to take this year-end reflection a step further, I’m offering a complementary Value Builder Assessment—a structured, data-driven tool that reveals how your company performs across the key drivers of long-term value.
It’s a powerful way to understand not just where your business stands today, but where it can go in 2026 and beyond.

You’ll receive a detailed report and we’ll schedule time to walk through your results together.
For many leaders, this becomes the catalyst for:
strengthening systems
refining priorities
improving profitability
reducing owner dependency
increasing transferable enterprise value
It’s the kind of clarity that makes strategic planning far more effective.
A Final Thought as We Close 2025
Every year brings challenges, surprises, and learning moments—2025 certainly did. But it also brought opportunities to strengthen the fundamentals of business: clarity, communication, accountability, and culture.
Whether this year exceeded your expectations or stretched you to your limits, you have an opportunity right now to choose the tone of 2026.
Finish with intention.
Begin with alignment.
Lead with purpose.
Wishing you a productive close to the year and a powerful start to 2026.
